BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) -- The City of Birmingham is working to address gun violence through a series of community programs and initiatives.

The Birmingham City Council approved items accepting nearly $2 million in bids for these programs Monday. Uche Bean, the director of the city's Community Safety Initiatives, said this is a four-prong strategy in response to recent mass shootings. That includes community outreach in certain areas.

"We are also looking to launch street teams and outreach workers and violence interventionalists that will be pushed into certain communities that are dealing with the worst type of violence and intervene, provide conflict resolution, mental health support, peer support and life skills training," Bean said.

They are also working to expand a hospital violence intervention program to the emergency program at UAB, Bean said.
