BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — A 69-year-old caregiver has been arrested and charged with allegedly abusing a woman with special needs in Wilsonville.
Back in September, deputies with the Shelby County Sheriff's Office received a report that included allegations of Cora June Morris abusing a family member with special needs. According to court records, Morris allegedly used zip ties to tie down the victim, who has Down syndrome, to a table on the patio, leaving her there for hours at a time to the point that her arm was injured. Morris is also accused of not feeding the victim "to a point to where she became malnourished."
The victim was subsequently removed from the home as the SCSO, in partnership with the Alabama Department of Human Resources and Owens House Advocacy Center, started investigating the case.
Morris was arrested Tuesday. She is charged with neglect/abuse off a disabled adult, which is a Class B felony. She was taken to the Shelby County Jail, where she was released later that day after posting $15,000 bond.
