BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) -- On Thursday, just after 5 p.m., the Birmingham 911 Communications Division received a call of a traffic accident that involved three vehicles, including a Birmingham Police Department patrol vehicle.

The crash occurred in the 6500 block of 1st Avenue North when a 2020 KIA Amanti being driven by Roger Smith, 56, of Birmingham crashed into a BPD vehicle containing two East Precinct patrol officers stopped at a traffic light. The impact caused the patrol vehicle to collide with a third vehicle.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel transported both officers to UAB Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

Smith was taken into custody by an East Precinct wreck officer under the suspicion that he was driving under the influence of alcohol.

On Friday, case information was presented to the City of Birmingham's Magistrate Office. After the information was assessed, Smith was charged with Driving Under the Influence.

Both officers are recovering from their injuries.
