HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) - According to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification notice, the Boeing Company will lay off 158 workers in Huntsville next month.
The notice was initially reported on Nov. 15, and shows that the company will lay off 158 employees in the Huntsville area starting Jan. 15. Boeing says that most employees notified they would be laid off will exit the company in mid-January.
Boeing announced in October that it planned to cut about 10% of employees, which is about 17,000 employees, in the coming months, citing financial and regulatory struggles.
When the Associated Press initially reported this, they stated that the notice was sent to 400 members of Boeing’s professional aerospace labor union, the Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace.
A Boeing spokesperson shared the following statement with News 19 when we asked about the Huntsville layoffs:
“As previously announced, we are adjusting our workforce levels to align with our financial reality and a more focused set of priorities. We are committed to ensuring our employees have support during this challenging time.”
Boeing also told News 19 that eligible employees will receive severance pay, career transition services, and subsidized health care benefits up to 3 months after exiting the company.
It is currently unclear exactly which sectors of the company in Huntsville have been affected by the mass layoffs.
