MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WIAT) -- For 40 years, Alabama State Sen. Jabo Waggoner (R-Vestavia Hills) has attended the Republican Convention.

Unlike most delegates, Waggoner has witnessed the evolution of the party. And at age 87, there's something special about this week's event.

"It's getting better every night," said Waggoner. "It's electric out here."

The state senator's first convention was back in 1984 when he was running for Congress. That year, he was a guest to support then Republican nominees Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush. That's when he knew he was right where he needed to be.

"But I kind of got the bug in 1984... but my wife and I do every four years we just look forward to it," said Waggoner. "But it all began in 1984 when I was simply a candidate."

He said of all years, this year in Milwaukee has been the best experience.

"You know, I'd say the convention so far this year would be my favorite. Seems like they've improved every year, every four years." And when it comes to why, Waggoner said there's one thing that makes this convention remarkable.

"You can see God throughout this convention- okay. It's been a powerful message," said Waggoner. "We're having fun, we're doing what we need to do as far as a Republican convention, but it has a religious tone to it. Which is going to make the difference in this election."

Tonight, delegates are expected to hear from JD Vance, President Trump's selection for Vice President. Waggoner said the excitement for their party in Milwaukee is unlike any other year.
