WALKER COUNTY, Ala. (WIAT) -- A seventh person is set to plead guilty in the 2023 death of inmate Anthony 'Tony' Mitchell.

On Monday, Walker County Correctional Officer Daniel Lee Allan Brown's plea agreement on one count of deprivation of rights was made public — making him the sixth officer to confirm their involvement in the case. Additionally, a nurse contracted to work at the jail has entered into a guilty plea agreement as well.

On Jan. 13, 2023, Mitchell was arrested by Walker County Sheriff’s deputies after allegedly firing at an officer during a wellness check. According to a lawsuit his family filed after his death, Mitchell was allegedly mistreated at the jail for days, keeping him in isolation, sometimes in a cold place. On January 26, he lost consciousness and police took him to a nearby hospital, where he later died. A coroner’s report indicated that the 33-year-old’s death was the result of hypothermia–his internal temperature when he arrived at the hospital was 72 degrees– as well as sepsis and “medical neglect.”

Following his death, the Walker County Sheriff’s Office maintained that Mitchell had been conscious at the time he was taken to the hospital, but leaked footage from the jail showed him being carried out by deputies at the time.

Several former Walker County Jail officers — Joshua Conner Jones, Karen Kelly, Bailey Ganey, Grayson Colin Woods, and Heather Criag — have reached agreements to plead guilty or pleaded guilty to deprivation of rights in connection to Mitchell’s death. Nurse Daniel Wyers, who was contracted to work at the jail from an outside party, pleaded guilty to denying care to Mitchell earlier this year.
