Alabama leaders respond to long lines, misprinted ballots on Election Day

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WIAT) -- Many Alabama voters were met with long lines and wait times at the polls Tuesday.

When it comes to those voting lines, Alabama Secretary of State Wes Allen said local election officials work hard to keep elections safe.

"What I'm most concerned with is making sure our elections are safe, secure and transparent and accountable to the people of Alabama," Allen said.

Ballots were printed without amendments in St. Clair County. Allen explained a vendor prints the ballots, and a probate judge approves them.

"All those judges throughout the state, they proof and make sure that the ballots are ready to go," Allen said. "Of course, the vendor that printed those ballots accepted the full responsibility for the mishap that happened there."

Despite these incidents, Allen said Election Day went well. When asked if early voting would solve these problems, he said he believes in having an Election Day.

"If you can register, and you still have to qualify and meet the criteria, why shouldn't you be able to vote the same day?" said state Sen. Linda Coleman-Madison (D-Birmingham). "We need to be doing everything we can to encourage people to vote."

Alabama Lt. Gov. Will Ainsworth said the current system of voting works.

"I think the way it works right now works great," Ainsworth said. "We don't really have -- very few issues with voter fraud. I think certainly, if you can't vote, you can vote absentee. But I think the way our election system in Alabama works well."

Allen said bringing early voting to the state is not up to him.

"I'm not in the legislative branch, and so I can't pass any laws to bring early voting to Alabama," Allen said. "But I'm sure if something like that gets brought up, I'll be involved in that conversation with that. But I'm most concerned with election integrity."

Ainsworth said the results of Tuesday's election will be really good for Alabama.
