TALLADEGA, Ala. (WIAT) -- The Talladega community is coming together to support a family whose 11-year-old daughter died by suicide last week. A message of kindness and compassion is sweeping through the city as residents remember Charlee Tayt Hubbard.
Charlee Tayt Hubbard is remembered by her mother as being happy, always smiling and lighting up any room she was in. Her family says that her death due to bullying came as a shock. Now, the community is rallying to make sure she will never be forgotten.
Shane Venns, the owner of Buddy's Barbecue, held a fundraiser for the Hubbard family last week.
"It was unbelievable," Venns said. "We were slammed with people the whole day, shoulder to shoulder."
Venns says that he doesn't know the Hubbard family personally, but when he heard about what happened, he opened his doors.
"We couldn't imagine the pain they were going through, so we just wanted to help any way we could," Venns said.
Dega Nutrition is selling stickers to help the family.
“It goes to show that God doesn’t pick and choose. They are some of the best people you could ever lay your eyes on,” said Shaiana Tracy, owner of Dega Nutrition.
The stickers have a message, "Be Kind," on them. It's a saying that Charlee Tayt Hubbard's mother has been advocating for, and the community is listening.
“I know several people have come to the lord from it. it has actually kind of put the community back together," said Venns.
The Hubbard family is working on a scholarship in their daughter's name, and they are asking for prayers.
