Tuesday: The first half of Tuesday will be dry as temperatures quickly warm into the middle 90s during the afternoon with several scattered showers and storms developing. Outside of the rain, heat index values will be in the lower 100s. A Heat Advisory is in effect for portions of central Alabama, where storms may be more spotty.
Looking Ahead: Rain chances will only increase heading into the end of our work week. A cold front will attempt to slide through the region, but it won’t quite make it completely through central Alabama. Instead, it will stall just to our north, becoming a focus for repeated rounds of heavy rain and storms mainly Wednesday through Saturday. One of the wetter periods this week where widespread rain and storms is expected will be on Thursday afternoon/evening. Spotty, yet still fairly widespread rain and storm coverage will continue into the early weekend before it evolves back into our typical widely scattered afternoon storms on Sunday and Monday.
Thankfully, the increase in cloud cover and rain will lower our high temperatures after Tuesday with highs only reaching the middle to upper 80s on Thursday through Saturday. However, the humidity will remain high as the stalled front will remain to our north, locking in the more comfortable air well to our north as well. Due to the muggy conditions remaining, overnight low temperatures will remain near average in the lower to middle 70s.
On average, 2-3” of rain can be expected across central Alabama through next Monday. Some locations could pick up closer to 4” where storms decide to train or remain over one spot longer than surrounding areas. This will be very welcomed relief to the ongoing drought conditions that have developed across the northern half of the state.
