MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WIAT) -- An in vitro fertilization (IVF) bill was passed by Alabama lawmakers earlier this year after the state supreme court ruled that frozen embryos are children with a right to life.

However, some say that the bill wasn't enough to address the issue.

"I am a secondary infertility family," IVF patient Anne Tyler Crider said. "And unfortunately, we have not been successful in our journey so far. But to be told we could not do IVF, I just can't imagine the heartbreak that would bring."

Crider said she and many other parents have concerns about accessibility and protection for IVF doctors. Crider spoke at a campaign event for Caroleene Dobson, candidate for Alabama's second congressional district.

Representative Donna Givens (R-Loxley) said it is imperative that Alabamians have access to in vitro fertilization.

"This is their only option, I'm thankful we have it," she said. "And I want them to be able to have a family. And if this is the means, I fully support it."

She said lawmakers are taking action.

"They've continued to meet and will bring it to us when the session starts. The bill that they propose, what they plan to do about it, and of course, the hopeful outcome," said Givens.

Rep. Mary Moore (D-Birmingham) said lawmakers have become too involved in the issue.

"So the ideal thing is for the state not to be involved at all. So that should be a personal decision that a woman and her mate make on her own," explained Moore.

Moore said they serve the citizenry as representatives, not authoritarians.

"When we get into the household -- to decide what goes on and how a family is started -- then I think we are beyond our call of duty," said Moore. "And beyond the oath that we take as elected officials."

Representative Terri Collins (R-Decatur) said there is no legislation pre-filed just yet, but a group of legislators have toured clinics to better understand the process.
