TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WIAT) — Monday marked the third annual Officer Kennis Croom Memorial Scholarship award ceremony in Tuscaloosa.
The scholarship is named in honor of Kennis Croom, who grew up in the Druid City but died in the line of duty as a police officer in Meridian, Mississippi.
"We want to continue his legacy and he was big in community events and helping with opportunities so it feels right to give out scholarships in his honor," Kelvin Croom, Kennis's brother and Croom Foundation organizer, said.
The Croom family awarded five students a combined total of $45,000 in scholarships.
