TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WIAT) — A new program has started to retain students at the University of Alabama and other local colleges to stay in Tuscaloosa once they graduate.

Fuel Alabama, a program of Innovate Alabama and EDPA, in partnership with the Tuscaloosa County Economic Development Authority, The Chamber of Commerce of West Alabama, and Visit Tuscaloosa have launched Anchor Tuscaloosa, an initiative that will feature community-building activities through five sessions during the 2025 spring semester.

As part of the program, college students will engage with local officials, as well as those working in business and nonprofit groups.

“In partnership with many organizations, and our local government entities, we understand
how important it is that we interact with our college students in a meaningful way to
connect them to our community,” Justice Smyth, executive director for the Tuscaloosa
County Economic Development Authority, said in a statement. “This program will empower us to engage with students who have a keen interest in locating here post-graduation. We’re excited to showcase why Tuscaloosa County is a vibrant place to live and work.”

The free opportunity is available for undergraduate and graduate students from UA, Stillman College, and Shelton State Community College who have completed at least 30 hours of credit prior to Dec. 31.

For its first year, the program will accept up to 40 participants. Applications
will be accepted through Dec. 1.
