BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Free lessons in reading, English and Spanish for adults are being offered in the Birmingham area.
St. Mark CME Church is hosting the community classes in partnership with Birmingham Jumpstart. They take place every Friday from noon to 2 p.m. at the Titusville church. No registration is required.
The 14-week program, which began on Oct. 4, is geared toward adults in the community who need help with their reading and communication skills.
Rev. Charles B. Williams, Jr. with St. Mark CME Church spoke on how important it is for community members to access these classes.
"The big picture is where we can serve and bridge the gap for those persons who do not have adequate reading skills. To help them to overcome those obstacles," Rev. Williams said. "We also want to make it easier for our Hispanic population to be able to accumulate [...] and feel more comfortable within the community."
