BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) -- CBS 42 is your local election headquarters. Next month, Jefferson County voters will decide on a new probate judge for place 1.
Republican John Amari is facing off against Democrat Yashiba Blanchard.
A probate judge has far-reaching impacts on a county. They oversee cases ranging from adoptions to mental health issues. The position also serves as the chief election officer for the county, something that both candidates on November's ballot take seriously.
“I think the one thing everyone agrees on is that they want fair elections, and so I think it's important to have someone who’s organized, someone who is experienced, and someone who is going to make sure those elections are fair,” said Amari.
Blanchard had similar remarks about the importance of being Jefferson County's chief election officer.
“I want to make sure there are fair elections, and everyone is educated as to their voting rights. And I will say I am the perfect candidate for that position,” Blanchard said.
A probate judges hear cases involving guardian and conservatorships, adoptions and the settlement of estates. Both candidates say their experience will help them with these matters.
“As a special district court judge and as a special circuit court judge I’ve seen the bench from both sides. I’ve seen a bench as a lawyer defended my clients on this side and as a judge, I have a bigger platform to get out there and help all the individuals in Jefferson County, the residents to get what they need done in probate court,” said Blanchard.
“Conservatorship guardianship when someone needs someone to watch over them and protect them. You know, these are the things I’ve been helping families with the Jefferson County now almost 2 decades and so I’m very experienced in probate court, and I’m excited to bring my experience as a judge to help these families judge to healthy families,” added Amari.
Blanchard and Amari will be on the ballot during the November 5th general election. CBS 42 will continue to follow this race and keep you updated.
