BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) -- Family and friends of Jordan Melton are remembering the Birmingham firefighter, one year after he was shot at work in what police say was a targeted attack.
Many of them gathered at Kelly Ingram Park Friday evening for a prayer vigil. Melton's mother, Rochelle Malone, spoke out at the vigil asking the community to come together and end gun violence.
"I'm not the only one that feels the way I feel. That's thinking that it's time for us to come together and speak out loud. Do this out loud in an effort to try to reach someone," said Malone.
Friends, family and colleagues of Melton joined her all wearing orange in honor of his favorite color, even those who didn't know him but know his story.
"This is a family. The fire department is a big family, so for us to come out here, to take our time to support and let his family know that we're behind them every step of the way means a lot," said Birmingham Fire and Rescue Lieutenant, Troynell Nieves.
A year after the shooting, Melton's mother says questions still remain.
"I'm just in the dark 12 months ago today as I was back in July 2023. Don't know anything new. It's frustrating. I respect the process and I've said that all along," said Malone. "What is frustrating and disappointing is the lack of correspondence from the Birmingham Police Department."
With a call on the community and law enforcement to help, Jefferson County District Attorney Danny Carr says those answers will soon come.
"The police not going to give up, and the district attorney, and I truly believe at some point there will be a determination of who did this, and then we will bring them to a court of law and hopefully bring justice for their family." said Carr.
In the meantime, Melton's mother says she's vowing to keep his memory alive, pursuing the goals he once wanted to accomplish.
"I want people to know that Jordan really wanted to make a difference in the lives of people not just serve as a firefighter." said Malone.
Police are still seeking answers in this case and they're calling on the community for help. If you know anything you are encouraged to call crime stoppers at 205-254-7777. You can remain anonymous.
