PIEDMONT, Ala. (WIAT) -- A Piedmont man is charged with murder in connection to his girlfriend's death on Saturday.

According to Piedmont police, officers were dispatched to the area of Hughes Street on report of a gunshot victim. Police arrived at a residence and found a woman in a back bedroom suffering from a gunshot wound to her head. The woman was breathing but unresponsive.

The victim was transported to a hospital but was pronounced dead. Piedmont police have not released the victim's name out of respect for her family.

Piedmont police and the Center for Applied Forensics at Jacksonville State University started investigating the shooting. They determined a domestic argument started between the woman and her boyfriend, who was identified as 42-year-old Damien Michael Bailey. The suspect allegedly shot his girlfriend.

Bailey was arrested and is charged with murder, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia. Bailey was booked into the Calhoun County Jail and is being held on no bond while awaiting an Aniah's Law hearing.

Police are continuing to investigate the case.
