MOUNTAIN BROOK, Ala. (WIAT) -- Power outages on Thursday kept crews from Alabama power busy statewide.

Thousands of customers in the Birmingham area were also by the storm. In Hoover, a downed tree was found at an apartment complex on Summerchase Drive, along with another downed tree at Storybrook Road and Harmony Lane.

CBS 42 News spent some time in Mountain Brook talking with homeowners who lost power.

Anthony Cook, a spokesperson with Alabama Power, said at its peak outage they had 110 thousand customers without power statewide.

That number dropped to around 26,000 by dinner time with 4,000 in the Birmingham area.

“Oh, it’s been really really windy, and in fact, our power went off for a while,” said Hallie Rawls, a Mountain Brook resident.

Rawls lost power over the lunch hour, forcing her to cancel plans for her husband to come home.

“No lunch,” Rawls said, “keeping that refrigerator door closed.”

Thankfully, her electricity came back on less than two hours later. Her neighbors across the street, however, were without power during the afternoon.

The roar of a generator was noticeable in one yard we observed.

We spoke with the mother of two young children who was hoping to have her power restored quickly. In the meantime, she came up with a quick fix.

“Yes, I have a 2-year-old and a 7-month-old, so hopefully they’ll stay asleep,” Amanda Rice explained. She has put some batteries in some sound machines and hopes that will help.

Alabama Power Spokesman Anthony Cook warned residents about downed power lines.

“When you have lots of rain there’s potential for flooding so there’s possibility for lines to be downed that you cannot even see," Cook said. “So be especially careful if you see downed trees, if you see leaning poles."

He also noted that if you’re in a car, don’t drive under a low hanging power line and don’t drive over a power line that’s on the ground.
