BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) -- A Birmingham man was sentenced to seven years in prison for illegal gun possession, according to US Attorney Prim F. Escalona.

Peter Gupton, 41, was sentenced to 84 months in prison after pleading guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm.

The plea agreement stated Birmingham police officers went to the scene of reported gunshots in Woodlawn on Feb. 23, 2023. Gupton had fled the scene on foot, but officers found him behind a dumpster and detained him.

Gupton then led officers to a loaded pistol he had hidden behind a bush at the Christ Health Center. The pistol was reported stolen and officers also found a shell casing near the area of the shooting.

The ATF investigated the case along with the Birmingham Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Daniel S. McBrayer prosecuted the case.
